Good afternoon Dragonfly families,
What a full, busy two weeks we’ve had! I hope your homes are settling into routines like we are at school. Don’t forget that next week we won’t have school on Monday (holiday) and Tuesday (Teacher Workday). Enjoy your long weekend and this beautiful weather!
Curriculum Night Our first curriculum night will be on Thursday, September 30th, from 5-6pm. This is a virtual event that will allow you to hear important instructional information about what your child will be learning throughout our first semester. More information will be coming soon!
HVAC System and Air Purifiers: WCPSS recognizes that well-maintained HVAC systems are important in reducing risks associated with COVID-19. Our school’s HVAC systems have been designed in accordance with the NC mechanical code and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommendations. In response to the pandemic, the district has upgraded to MERV 13 air filters, an important risk-reduction strategy for COVID-19.
The district nor the school is asking parents to donate air purifiers. A few families reached out asking if they could donate air purifiers to provide an extra layer of protection. Since this is not something that our district has designated as mandatory or necessary, we will not fundraise to provide air purifiers in all classrooms due to the expenses and other needs in the building at this time. However, if you’re interested in donating one to your child’s classroom, please contact the classroom teacher or reach out to Dr. Sykes.
Procedures in place during the day We are practicing mask wearing, washing and sanitizing hands, as well as social distancing during the school day. Classes are set up so that students are sitting in pods and these pods travel together throughout the day to lunch and Quests. This helps us be able to contact trace if there is ever a need.
Carpool We are aware that our carpool dismissal time has increased and many of you may be waiting in the line for long periods of time. We apologize for this inconvenience, but please know we are continuing to follow health safety guidelines to keep your students safe which in turn causes our lines to move slower than normal. This means that even though we have someone collecting your numbers while you are in line, your student has to then walk from their classroom to the front of the building. We do not release students until the bell rings at 3:45pm.
We have a few requests for you to follow that will help us improve our carpool time and get you and your family home safe:
Have your student(s) learn their carpool #. This will help improve our time the most!
Keep your carpool tag hanging from your rearview mirror all the way to the front. The staff at the front need to see your number to assist students to their car.
Please do not get out of your car during carpool dismissal. We understand you are waiting and we have called your student who will be walking from their class to meet you. We will assist your student in getting to your car safely.
Parents cannot park in the church across the street and walk to pick up your student. This is private property and we are not affiliated with the church and do not have permission for our parents to park there.
Please do not park in the bus loop. Only buses, daycare vans, special transportation vans, and students in our ECS 1-2, and PreK AU classroom are allowed to be dismissed from this area.
Please refrain from using your cell phone while in the carpool line.
For morning carpool arrival, please encourage your students to have their masks on and ready for when they exit the car to make getting out of the car quicker.
Respectfully take turns pulling into our school for carpool coming from both sides of the street.
Please make sure you do not block the entrance to the bus loop on Dillard Drive. Our buses need to be able to exit the bus loop safely. Please let buses out of the drive if you are on Dillard Drive.
Please make sure that you are communicating with your child’s teacher, if your child’s method of transportation has changed for the day. Please make sure you get confirmation from the teacher. If you do not get confirmation, please call the main office line at 919 233-4200.
We ask for your continued patience and grace as we work through this year’s challenges. We understand this process has been quite enduring but we continue to need your patience as our main priority is to keep your students safe.
Care Center Students who feel unwell when they are at school are sent to the Care Center. If you receive a call from the Care Center Attendant, please make arrangements to pick up your child immediately. We have had students in our Care Center for over an hour this week and it has impacted our classrooms in a variety of ways. Our Care Center is staffed by our Instructional Assistants and we want them to get back to their classrooms as soon as possible to support classroom instruction.
Stay home when sick. All students should have their temperature taken every day at home before coming to school. You may not enter a school or WCPSS facility if you are:
Diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 10 days
Exposed to COVID-19 within the last 14 days and not fully vaccinated
Instructed to quarantine
Sick or experiencing any of these symptoms of illness
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
When students can return to school Students who are not feeling well but do not have one of the COVID-19 symptoms listed above may return to school after they have gone at least 24 hours without a fever or the use of fever-reducing medicine.

*** If you have a child that has an outstanding Covid 19 test and you are waiting on the results, PLEASE do not send your child to school until the results are back.
If your child is out sick, please make sure you communicate with your child’s teacher. Please send an alternate diagnosis from the doctor, or a negative Covid 19 PCR test if your child was out due to feeling unwell with a Covid symptom.
Absences If your student is out, for whatever the reason, please communicate with your child’s teacher. We don’t want to assume that the student was sick and needs to follow quarantine/sick student guidelines before returning to school.
BIRTHDAYS AND SPECIAL OCCASIONS
At this time, we are unable to receive food from visitors. Please do not send in any food or items for birthday celebrations. Classroom teachers will recognize students’ birthdays and will ensure that students are recognized on their special day.
Lunch Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we are also not able to have visitors for lunch. If your child forgets his/her lunch box, ALL students have access to free breakfast and lunch everyday.
Join us for our first Spirit Night Fundraiser!
At Dillard, we agreed not to fundraise by having students sell items. Therefore, we rely heavily on donations and participation at events, such as Spirit Nights at local restaurants. We’re excited to kick off this year spirit night with dessert! Come join us at Flavors Ice Cream On September 15th from 3-9pm. Flavors is located in the Swift Creek Shopping Center at 2831 Jones Franklin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27606. We will receive 25% of all the sales made during our allotted time! Mrs. Griffin and I hope to see you there!

Purificadores de aire y sistema HVAC: WCPSS reconoce que los sistemas HVAC en buen estado son importantes para reducir los riesgos asociados con COVID-19.
