Face Coverings Required in All Schools
Last night, the Wake County Board of Education voted to require all students and staff to wear face coverings while indoors at school. The requirement also applies to school buses and vendor transportation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NC Department of Health and Human Services and Wake County Public Health recommend that everyone wear a face covering while inside a school, even if they are vaccinated. The school district will regularly review its face covering requirements, but county health officials say a much larger percentage of students must be vaccinated before requirements can be relaxed.
Community spread The number of people in Wake County with COVID-19 is once again increasing. This is likely because the newest form of the virus spreads more easily than the original version of COVID-19.
Health officials expect the number of people with COVID-19 in our county will keep climbing until a larger majority of people are vaccinated.
That makes the proper use of face coverings critical in our schools. If face coverings are not worn correctly, health officials predict a significant number of students will be required to quarantine due to possible exposures.
Help us avoid the need for additional quarantines While health officials say some quarantines will be inevitable, the school district also needs your help outside of school to reduce quarantines and increase in-person instruction.
How you can help:
Get vaccinated | Everyone ages 12 and older are urged to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Learn more.
Wear a face covering properly over the nose, mouth, and chin in all indoor public settings | With most students now attending school in-person, the spread of COVID-19 at social gatherings outside of school is a significant challenge for schools. Learn more.
Stay home | If you don’t feel well or you’ve been around someone with COVID-19, stay home to avoid possibly spreading it to other people. Learn more.
Physical distance | Wait six feet apart from people who don’t live with you whenever possible. Learn more.
Wash your hands | Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Learn more.
Re-evaluating health requirements The decision to require face coverings will be reviewed at least quarterly by the school board. Related guidance involving areas such as recess, lunch and athletics will be shared before the beginning of the traditional-calendar school year.
We appreciate your understanding, cooperation, and support in helping us provide the in-person instruction families desire.
